White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday confirmed that the US government recently reached out to North Korea, but heard nothing back.
“I can confirm that we have reached out,” Psaki said at her daily press briefing.
She added: “Diplomacy is always our goal. Our goal is to reduce the risk of escalation. But to date, we have not received any response.”
The Communist state’s portly despot Kim Jong Un met three times with former President Donald Trump, but the billionaire developer was unable to convince the hermit leader to give up his nuclear weapons in exchange for seaside resorts and a reprieve from harsh sanctions.
Psaki said that the US outreach to North Korea “follows over a year without active dialogue with North Korea, despite multiple attempts by the U.S. to engage.”
Kim publicly wished Trump and then-first lady Melania Trump a speedy recovery from COVID-19 in October.
“[Kim] sincerely hoped that they would recover as soon as possible. He hoped they will surely overcome it,” the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported. “He sent warm greetings to them.”
The KCNA referred to Biden in 2019 as a “rabid dog” who was experiencing “the final stage of dementia.”
